ROUTE MAPS / THE JOURNEY BETWEEN CHALLENGES

Not a menu
of projects.
A designed journey.

A Route Map sequences purposeful Challenges so knowledge deepens, important ideas recur, agency increases and future choices remain visible.

Follow Mia from 14 onwards

THREE LEVELS / THREE DIFFERENT JOBS

The curriculum defines.
The Route Map connects.
The Challenge brings it to life.

01THE CURRICULUM

What every learner is entitled to learn and develop

Protected subject knowledge, the four entitlements and clear expectations for progression.

02THE ROUTE MAP

How learning becomes a coherent journey

A purposeful sequence that protects breadth, revisits important ideas and makes prerequisites visible.

03THE CHALLENGE

Where knowledge meets a serious question

A fully resourced period of teaching, application, expert encounter, evidence and reflection.

Individual Challenges are not the curriculum. The Route Map prevents an attractive collection of experiences from becoming a fragmented education.

AN ILLUSTRATIVE ROUTE / MIA

The same learner.
Increasing depth.
Wider horizons.

This is an illustration, not a prescribed programme. Select each stage to see what changes and what deliberately returns.

AGE 14 / HIGH SUPPORT

North Staffordshire made the world. What should it make next?

Mia begins with local industrial history, geology, transport, energy and materials. Teachers explicitly build the knowledge needed before design begins.

THE SPIRAL OF LEARNING

Return does not mean repeat.

Mia encounters important ideas more than once. Each return adds knowledge, changes the context and expects more independent judgement.

EnergyFrom identifying transfer to evaluating whole systems and trade-offs.
EvidenceFrom selecting a source to testing claims, uncertainty and competing interpretations.
CollaborationFrom fulfilling a defined role to leading interdisciplinary work while retaining individual accountability.
SelfFrom noticing interests to making informed choices and explaining why they matter.
Agency increases as expertise increases.

THE COVERAGE MAP

Choice is visible.
So are the gaps.

My Space and the Route Map can show what Mia has encountered, what teachers have taught, what she has applied and what has been verified.

This is not a scoring system. It is a way to ask whether the intended learning and opportunity have actually reached the learner.

COMMON ARCHITECTURE / PERSONAL ROUTES

Coherence without
a conveyor belt.

Not every learner follows Mia’s sequence. Schools, teachers and learners make informed choices within a quality-assured architecture.

Common

Protected knowledge, entitlement expectations, Challenge standards, verification and progression safeguards.

Adaptable

Challenge sequence, local partners, delivery pattern, scaffolding and appropriate forms of evidence.

Personal

Interests, selected evidence, reflections, emerging opportunity domains and next horizons within My Space.

No closed doors

Route Maps display qualification prerequisites early enough to protect choices, identify gaps and show how options might be preserved or reopened.

THE DESIGN QUESTION

What should recur?
What should deepen?
What should become possible next?

A North Staffordshire discovery phase would co-design the entitlement, build exemplar Route Maps and test them against real qualifications, timetables and progression decisions.
